Kodam Puli · Kerala · Over a Century Old
"Never mind trying to pronounce our family name — just ask for Kodam Pulli Veedu."
The Vempazhatharayil family has been growing, drying and smoking their own kodam puli for over a hundred years. Picked by hand. Cured naturally. Shared with love — just as my grandmother did.
The story
"The aroma of a Kerala fish curry lies in the erudite puli which lies benevolently in the red fish curry that makes every Malayali household fragrant and rich."
— Anju Mathew, Vempazhatharayil Tharavadu
My grandmother used to diligently share her bounty with all her siblings, children, friends and relatives. Our family called it our "family treasure" — and treasure it is. Now it is for you to taste.
The making of the puli is hard and tough — but when love is involved in the picking, drying and smoking process, the puli emerges black, soft, silky and absolutely beautiful.
All naturally and conventionally done — and preserved even today. No shortcuts. No chemicals. The same process used for over a century.
How it's made
Every step is done by hand, the traditional way. Sun, smoke and salt do the rest.
Handpicked from our family's own compound trees
Laid out to dry naturally under the Kerala sun
Gently smoked the traditional way for depth of flavour
Preserved with only salt and oil — nothing else
How to use
A little goes a long way. Just a few pieces is all it takes to make your fish curry extraordinary.
Rinse a few pieces under running water
Soak in water for 15 minutes
Discard the soaking water
Add before the fish goes in. That's it.

What people say
"I have been using Vempazhatharayil Tharavad puli for the past few years. It is extraordinary in the fact that it is well curated and well preserved. As a result it adds more flavour to the curry and only a small amount is needed. If I place an order, she makes it a point that I get it at the earliest, though we are miles apart. I highly recommend her puli."
